Update 5: You do not need to be a groupie to contribute art to a group [link]
This fact address a misconception that many users have held up until now. Many current clubs require that a user be a member in order to contribute art to the club. Groupies are the nearest approximation in the groups system to the members in clubs. Thus it was thought that a user had to be a groupie in order to submit art to a group. It was thought that because Basic groups are restricted to 100 groupies that essentially Basic groups would be restricted to 100 users who could contribute art. This misconception sparked a petition on #communityrelations, a petition to raise or remove the groupie limit to allow more users to submit artwork to a group. However, Basic groups are not restricted to 100 contributing members, eventually anyone will be able to contribute art to any group so long as there is permission granted by the user posting the art and the group accepting the art into their gallery.
Concerning a recent bout of dArama on #communityrelations, it has been requested that no more comments should be posted there concerning groupie limits [link] & [link]

Update 4: I've been told that this limitation will change but the reason for it is to make groups more precious so that people don't moderate 50 groups and forget about them. this way, it means that there shouldn't be 10,000 dead groups that have died off because of lack of enthusiasm
Update 3: I should add that if you already are the founder of multiple groups, yes you can still be the "founder" of those groups on the new system. (I.e. they're grandfather-clausing them in) What the founder limitation means is that you can only become the founder of one group - if you start off with owning 3 groups and pass the founder status on to someone else, you're stuck with 2 groups left. There will be no way (at the moment) for you to join more.

Update 2: Ok, i've just been informed that a new limitation has been implemented allowing users to only become a moderator/co-founder/founder of one group!
you can still however, be a groupie in as many groups as you want though.
Your feedback on this would be appreciated
Update 1: The groupie limit for basic groups has been upped from 50 to 100
OK, so I'm going going to clear some stuff up here about group limitations, as there has been a lot of arguing going on about them...
Roles and Member Limitations:
Basic Groups:
- Founders: 1
- Co-founders: 2
- Moderators: 7
- Groupies: 100
Super Groups:
- Founders + Co-founders + Moderators: 60
- Groupies: 1000
Pro Groups:
- ???
Profile Limitations:
Basic Groups are only allowed to have one custom box per page (one on the front page and one in the backroom, for example). Also, only one gallery/collection folder can appear on each page.
Modules which cannot be used unless the group is subscribed include Polls, devMEET (can be seen on #hq) and the Countdown module (can be seen on #fella).
Blogging Limitations:
For basic groups, just like non-subscribers, thumbnails and CSS cannot be used.
Member Management Limitations:
When managing the privileges of certain members, basic groups have slightly fewer options (but the role management is still very easy to use and very effective).
Layout Limitations:
The layout for a basic group is much more like a normal user page (with the profile links at the top rather than at the side). The names of the gallery and backroom also cannot be changed.
For those of you who are interested in subscribing a group account, here is some information about how the subscription process will work:
The subscription process for groups is still under construction, but to give you a vague idea, it will allow users to chip in various amounts of money rather than having to pay for an entire subscription at once.
Overall, despite the limitations on basic groups, they are much more effective and easier to use than a normal user account acting as a "group" or "club!" None of these limitations prevent a group from functioning, but if you do want an enhanced user experience, a subscription would be well worth it.
If you have any questions, or have any ideas as to what limitations you think there should be, feel free to tell us and we'll do our best to answer any questions!
Thank you!
